A derma roller, also known as a microneedling roller, is a skincare device that consists of a small roller covered in tiny needles. It is designed to create microscopic punctures in the skin, which stimulates the body's natural healing response and promotes collagen and elastin production.
When used correctly and with caution, a derma roller can potentially help reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve overall skin texture. Here's how it works:
Prep your skin: Start by thoroughly cleansing your face and applying a gentle toner to remove any impurities. Make sure your skin is dry before proceeding.
Choose the right needle length: Derma rollers come in various needle lengths, ranging from 0.2mm to 2.5mm. For reducing fine lines, it is generally recommended to use a shorter needle length (around 0.5mm). Longer needles are typically used by professionals in clinical settings.
Roll the derma roller: Gently roll the derma roller over your skin in a horizontal, vertical, and diagonal pattern. Apply light pressure and ensure even coverage of the desired area. Avoid rolling too forcefully to prevent skin damage.
Use a serum: Immediately after rolling, apply a suitable serum or treatment that contains beneficial ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or peptides. The microchannels created by the derma roller can enhance the absorption of these active ingredients.
Post-care: Cleanse the derma roller thoroughly after each use to maintain hygiene. Avoid using makeup or harsh skincare products for at least 24 hours after the treatment. Protect your skin from the sun by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the daytime.

After cleaning/sterilizing, place the derma roller on a clean towel until it is dry. Once dry, replace the needle cap and store the roller in a clean place. Whenever possible, try not to let the derma roller's needles come into contact with any hard surface (doing so will make them blunt more quickly). You will know when your derma roller needs replacing; when the needles become blunt you will find it becomes more difficult to push them into your skin.
